Opioid use increasing in people aged 55+: study

The study looked at older adults ages 55+ and compared Ontario data between 2017 and 2025. Epidemiologist Tara Gomes says doctors are more aware of the worsening trend, and that screening for opioid use has been increasing. “The number of older adults with opioid use disorder has doubled in Ontario. It has reached more than 15,000 people across the province. And in parallel, the numbers of people in that age group who are accessing treatment has actually tripled,” said Gomes.
