Champagne suggests Canada will not back down on US counter-tariffs 1 week before they take effect

This is not a situation that we have created. But I think everyone understands that we need to respond,” Champagne told reporters. Effective Tuesday at 12:01 a.m., Canada will impose 15, 25 and 50 per cent counter-tariffs on over 700 products drawn from those targeted by America’s Section 338 and Section 232 tariffs – equaling $27.6 billion in imports from the U.S. Sectors such as steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics – which are most impacted by U.S. tariffs – will be targeted. “The countermeasure we've put forward – the $27.6 billion was, first of all, dollar-for-dollar and tariff-for-tariff, so it was very measured, targeted and strategic,” the minister added, justifying the federal government’s response.
