At its peak, more than 96 per cent of the moon was covered by Earth’s shadow. The celestial event gave the moon a reddish hue as sunlight filtered through Earth’s atmosphere. Crowds gathered at viewing spots from Rio de Janeiro to Mexico City to catch a glimpse of the eclipse.
