The federal government reports the current death toll at around 5,000 people, but many experts believe the final toll to be double that figure.
“Knowing they are there is enough. What we need is to recover their bodies and give them a proper burial, and to be able, mentally and emotionally, to close that chapter," La Guaira resident Arlinda Prada said.
Acting President Delcy Rodriguez has defended her government’s response to the disaster, while Venezuelan citizens and sources provided by Reuters suggest military and police personnel have done little to help victims of the quake — leaving civilians and volunteers to spearhead much of the response.
