Police say they arrested a 20-year-old Marine stationed at the Futenma Air Station after 39-year-old Anna Yagi was found dead in her hotel room in Okinawa, with her wallet and backpack missing.
“Such incidents are utterly unacceptable, and I am deeply outraged. In response to this incident, we have lodged a strong protest with the U.S. side and have strictly demanded that they thoroughly educate their personnel, enforce discipline, take thorough measures to prevent incidents and accidents, and provide prompt and appropriate support to the victim’s bereaved family.” Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said.
Nearly 50,000 U.S. troops are currently stationed in Okinawa, and the latest allegations place renewed attention on long-running tensions over the large American military presence in Japan.
