Taiwan throttles mobile internet for the first time during annual war games

The government throttled mobile internet connectivity across a large central region of the island nation for the first time ever – meant to simulate a communication disruption in the event of a large-scale invasion or natural disaster. “I think it’s a good thing,” 50-year-old Taipei resident Chen Chun-Wei said, “Carrying out these kinds of (military) exercises regularly gives our armed forces more valuable experience and helps them to be better prepared.” Taiwan President Lai Ching-Te oversaw coastal strike drills over the weekend, explaining the necessity of such drills “is to use live troops, live terrain, and live equipment to test command coordination, combat responsiveness, and homeland defence capabilities.” The 10-day drills started on Aug. 5 and are designed to prepare for and deter any potential invasion as China repeatedly claims sovereignty over the island nation as part of its reunification agenda.
