According to Prime Minister Nikos Christodoulides, the ferry faced adverse weather conditions and began taking in water just 15 minutes after departure. Video footage from the scene shows passengers standing on the capsized vessel wearing life vests, waiting to be rescued. Helicopters and ships were dispatched for rescue operations. The ferry involved was one of several daily shuttle sea services that link north Cyprus with Turkey and was carrying around 270 passengers.
