On Feb. 27, 1996, Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue were released on the Nintendo Game Boy in Japan, marking the introduction to the colourful “pocket monsters.” From there, the name exploded into a worldwide phenomenon, producing even more video games, countless movies, a long-running anime, highly-sought-after trading cards and a plethora of adored characters, like Pikachu and Charizard. The Pokémon Company marked its third decade with a slew of announcements and teasers, including a first look at the franchise’s upcoming tenth generation of video games – Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, which were revealed as 2027 releases.
