The Liverpool-born star was shot dead in New York City in 1980. As per tradition, thousands of fans gathered at Strawberry Fields on Monday — the memorial placed in Central Park, where Lennon was killed — to commemorate the music icon. Fans offered tributes to Lennon in the form of words, songs, and art. “I think the Beatles were just such a historically wonderful band and their music is so identifiable, and [Lennon] was at the helm of that,” India Flanagan, a fan of the late musician said. To this day, Mark David Chapman, the man who assassinated Lennon, remains in prison. His next hearing is in February 2027 — though he has been denied parole on several occasions.
