Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina sentenced to death over student protest crackdown

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChLtXXpo4Ge1ReTEboVvTDg https://ift.tt/q0fS9IY Sheikh Hasina, the former prime minister of Bangladesh, was handed a death sentence by a Dhaka court on Friday for alleged crimes against humanity. Hasina, who is demanding what she calls a “fair trial” in a months-long trial, was found guilty of ordering a crackdown which resulted in the deaths of 1,400 people in student-let protests in August 2024. Though several audience members cried at the court’s verdict Friday, most reactions were in favour of the decision, with many suggesting Hasina is getting what she deserves. “It pacified us a bit,” 59-year-old Abdur Rab – the father of a victim – said of the verdict. “But we will be fully content when we see the hangman’s rope around her neck. We will be able to take off the smudge from our history,” he added. Currently, the Bangladeshi government is seeking Hasina’s extradition from India, where she has been living in exile since resigning from her post – one day after the mass casualties.
