Egyptians protest at Rafah crossing into Gaza after Trump suggests Egypt take displaced Palestinians

During a visit to Rafah on Tuesday, North Sinai Governor Khaled Megawer rejected Trump’s idea, saying it wasn’t “personal,” but moving Palestinians from “their land to the Egyptian territory” would result in the “Palestinian case” being lost – a decades-spanning issue regarding the ownership of land and territories in the Middle East. “We support President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi in his confrontation with the forced displacement of our Palestinian brothers and the liquidation of the Palestinian [conflict) at the expense of the Palestinian people,” one protester said. When asked by reporters if he envisioned his suggestion as a long- or short-term solution for Palestinians, Trump said, “It could be either,” triggering outrage across Gaza, and throughout the Middle East. Since the latest ceasefire deal went into affect, tens of thousands of Palestinians have been making their way back to the war-torn Gaza Strip – many with nowhere left to call home. Since Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023 attack in south Israel, more than 47,000 people have been killed across both Israel and Gaza.
