Icelanders reject EU-accession talks in close-fought referendum

In a referendum, nearly 52.8 per cent of voters rejected the proposal, according to the state broadcaster. The vote was held amid concerns over U.S. President Donald Trump's annexation threats toward neighboring Greenland, prompting some voters to consider European solidarity. “I think the most important thing is that we come out of this united,” Iceland’s Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir said Sunday, “I'm not going to say things might not change in the future, but our promise was to ask, get a result, respect it. This government will continue with the EEA agreement, but we will not go further with accession talks.” The result comes nearly 13 years after membership talks were ended by a coalition government opposed to joining the EU.
