“It was tough. I'm not going to pretend otherwise, really, really tough, as I grappled with what was the best thing to do for me, for the country, for the government,” Starmer said in a BBC interview.
Starmer, 63, said he made, what he calls, the “intensely personal decision,” during a family vacation at Chequers – the prime minister’s countryside home in Buckinghamshire, England.
The decision was made official on June 22 after Starmer struggled with economic promises and facing increasing criticism for appointing scandal-linked figures.
Starmer assumed office on July 5, 2024 after winning a landslide election victory. His successor will mark the U.K.’s sixth prime minister in only seven years. Nominations for that role start on July 9.
