Ebola outbreak “may be larger than currently detected,” WHO says as cases spike in Uganda, Congo

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the spread a public health emergency of international concern Sunday, reporting 246 suspected cases and 80 deaths in Congo’s Ituri province alone. On Monday, UN spokesperson Farhan Haq said there have been at least 482 cases of Ebola in Ituri since April, adding that the UN – alongside the WHO and other humanitarian partners – has stepped in to actively support a government-led response to the spread.
