Rwanda-backed M23 rebels take control of strategic Congo town in blow to peace talks

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChLtXXpo4Ge1ReTEboVvTDg https://ift.tt/ZJgYovr The Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group consolidated control over the strategic town of Uvira in the eastern Congo on Thursday, as the government warned it could derail U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to broker peace in the region. For months, Uvira served as a base for the Kinshasa-appointed provincial government after rebels captured the provincial capital, Bukavu, in February. The rebel coalition said Uvira residents were safe and could resume activities in the town. The latest breakthrough in M23’s advance comes less than a week after Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame met with Trump in Washington to affirm their commitment to a U.S.-brokered peace deal.
