'Taxons les riches': Protesters in France decry budget cuts, call for wealth tax

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChLtXXpo4Ge1ReTEboVvTDg https://ift.tt/vfH7BFb Hundreds of thousands took part in anti-austerity protests across France on Thursday, unions said, urging President Emmanuel Macron and his new Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu to acknowledge their anger and scrap looming budget cuts. Protesters are calling for the previous government's fiscal plans to be scrapped, for more spending on public services, higher taxes on the wealthy, and for the reversal of an unpopular change that makes people work longer to get a pension. "The government needs to understand that we are fed up with austerity, that there are real measures that need to be taken to save France, but these aren't the ones that need to be taken against workers," said Airbus Helicopters worker Regis Delu. Lecornu's predecessor, Francois Bayrou, was ousted by parliament last week over his plan for a €44 billion budget squeeze. The new prime minister has not yet said what he will do with Bayrou's plans, but has signalled a willingness to compromise.
