3 Indigenous MPs who performed haka in New Zealand parliament may get suspended

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChLtXXpo4Ge1ReTEboVvTDg https://ift.tt/AuKqXnW New Zealand's parliamentary committee recommended on Wednesday the suspension of three Indigenous politicians following the performance of a haka during the reading of a contentious bill last year. "It is not the haka, it is not about tikanga, it’s not about the Treaty of Waitangi, it is about following the rules of parliament, that we are all obliged to follow and that we all pledge to follow," said Judith Collins, head of the Privileges Committee. Parliament must now vote to approve the suspension. The vote is expected to pass with the support of the ruling conservative coalition. The report found that while both haka, Maori ceremonial dance, and song are not uncommon occurrences in parliament, members were aware that permission from the speaker was needed beforehand unless they were performed during their speech.
