https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChLtXXpo4Ge1ReTEboVvTDg https://ift.tt/UwpvVP6 Norfolk Island residents were left “dumbfounded” the hefty 29 per cent tariff imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, a former islander said Friday, following the president’s announcement earlier in the week. The tiny Australian territory has a population just over 2,000 people and limited exports and manufacturing. Gye Duncan, a former resident and owner of a financial consultancy service on the island said locals were amused and baffled by the tariff. He said the island’s main industry is tourism and hopes the sudden international attention will boost publicity and encourage more people to visit the island. “Everyone’s laughing about it,” he said. “They’re either laughing about it or confused because there’s no real reason, or no logical reason why he would do that.” According to U.S. government data, the United States has recorded trade deficits with Norfolk Island for the past three years – it exported $300,000 worth of goods to the U.S. in 2022, $700,000 in 2023 and $200,000 in 2024.
