The UN reported that criminal gangs have trafficked thousands of people to scam compounds across Southeast Asia. "We are not scammers. We are victims. They use us," said a victim of a scam compound, Faysal and added, “Our job was, they gave us the client numbers. We add the number from the WhatsApp and we send them (a) message... We made relationship with him. When client say 'I love you', then we start wash his brain--how to get money.” "I got a lot of punishments, like I receive shock, electric shock everyday," said Yotor, another victim of the scam compound.
