“Never mistake our generosity for weakness”: Chrétien takes aim at Trump on 9/11 anniversary

Among distinguished guests at the ceremony was former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, who was PM at the time of the attacks. Chrétien had a message for U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, which is currently mired in an escalating trade war with Canada. “Canadians are tolerant and kind. But never mistake our generosity for weakness. Never mistake our tolerance for lack of determination. And never mistake our kindness for softness… Welcoming people from all over the world, caring for each other, including for the weakest in society is a sign of strength… But we bow to no one,” Chrétien said adding “I say that not in anger, but from one friend to another.” He also recalled the attacks and the role that Gander played on that fateful day. “It was a day where we saw the worst of humanity and the very best. One of the very best moments was here in Gander. Without a moment of hesitation, a community of ten thousand welcomed 6,500 people.” It was Sept. 11, 2001 when residents of Gander and surrounding regions stepped up in the aftermath to offer more than 6,000 passengers and crew comfort, after 38 planes landed there that day.
