If designation is confirmed, these Arctic initiatives – constructed under the Building Canada Act – will be eligible for fast-tracked approvals and sidestepping some environmental laws.
Transport Minister Steve MacKinnon first outlined the details for the two transportation infrastructure projects: the Mackenzie Valley Highway and the Grays Bay Road and port project – projects that construction likely won’t begin on until at least 2028.
Next, the minister detailed the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s Deep Geological Repository – which will be in northwestern Ontario, near the Ojibwe Nation’s Wabigoon Lake. The current timeline for construction if designated? Roughly 2030.
Speaking to reporters in Yellowknife, N.W.T., MacKinnon said the Deep Geological Repository would be designed to “provide the safe long-term management of Canada’s use of nuclear fuel.”
