The act was matched with the release of roughly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israel and marked the crux of the first phase of a peace agreement between Israel and Hamas, who had been at war in Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023. Currently, a ceasefire is in effect in the Gaza Strip, but uncertainty remains about a potential second phase of the U.S.-brokered deal. Though he sees the hostage-prisoner exchange and ceasefire as a positive for the Middle East, Anwar Sadat, a professor at the University of Maryland and senior fellow at Brookings Institution, expressed concern that a second phase may not happen at all, and that Israel could resume its bombardment of Gaza.
