Protests erupt in Nepal over social media ban, at least 19 killed

Frustration boiled over on Monday as protesters, most of whom were youth, attempted to storm Parliament to denounce government corruption and speak out against the social media shutdown, which demonstrators argue is an attack on free speech. Thousands of protesters attempted to enter the legislature by breaking through a police barricade, authorities said. Nepal has blocked access to several social media platforms, including Facebook, X and WhatsApp, after they failed to register with authorities. The government claims users with fake IDs have spread hate speech and fake news, and are committing fraud and other crimes on the sites.
