Turkey's Erdogan says protests over arrest of Istanbul mayor are "movement of violence"

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChLtXXpo4Ge1ReTEboVvTDg https://ift.tt/Plfotnu Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Monday that protests over the jailing of Istanbul's mayor had turned into a "movement of violence" and said the main opposition party would be held accountable for injured police officers and damage to property. "123 of our security personnel were injured in five days due to attacks by marginal organizations and city bandits," Erdogan said. Police pepper sprayed a crowd of protesters and detained some of the people after thousands rallied outside the Istanbul municipality. They also scuffled with the protesters as they attempted to push the crowd back. The detention last Wednesday of Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, Erdogan's main political rival, has triggered the biggest street protests in Turkey in more than a decade. On Sunday, a court jailed him, pending trial, on corruption charges that he denies.
