Germany’s Scholz reiterates Canadian support amid US tensions: “We stand by Canada’s side”

Though the Social Democrat did not directly call out U.S. President Donald Trump, Scholz called Canada an “independent, sovereign country” as Trump continually expresses interest in absorbing Canada as a “51st state.” “We must return to a peaceful world in which one principle is clear: the stronger neighbours are not a threat to their weaker neighbours,” Scholz said. Scholz is one of the few European leaders to express support for Canada as a civil North American trade war unfolds.
